Cleaning and Care

Jewellery

Your beautiful new jewels are made from quality 925 sterling silver or 22k gold vermeil and natural shells. They require a little extra care to ensure they have a long (and shiny!) life.

* Please note 925 exception with the Oceania earring hooks. These required a stronger silver composition and are 900 sterling silver.

STERLING SILVER

Please be gentle when handling your jewellery. Sterling silver is a soft and malleable metal that can easily bend or break under force or when dropped, knocked or stored incorrectly. Never try to adjust the sizing or fit of your ring by bending it. Shingle & Shell chains are fragile and should not be worn when there is risk of them being caught as they will snap if pulled vigorously. When not being worn, your jewellery should be stored in the bag provided. Please don't throw it loose into your jewellery box or makeup bag.

While I guarantee all silver used (with Oceania hook exception) is sterling silver 925, I do not always have the 925 stamp design as occasionally it interferes with the design aesthetic.

HANDMADE STYLES INCLUDING SHELLS

Many of my styles are handmade and require extra care when handling. Shells in particular can shatter or fall out if dropped. Please take extra care when cleaning around the area where the shell or gemstone meets the metal as this junction is particularly fragile.

Store jewellery in a cool, dry place.

OXIDATION

Chemicals such as chlorine in pools and spas, hairspray, perfume, lotions (and even air and the naturally occurring oils on your skin!) will react with silver over time and cause it to oxidise. This is perfectly normal. However, good habits will slow this process down.

Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place, wrapped in a soft piece of cloth or other safe storage option such as the bag it came in when not being worn.

Follow the last on, first off rule - put your jewellery on last when getting ready to go out, after you've applied lotions, perfumes and other products, and make sure it's the first thing off before you shower or start using cleansing products.

Polish your jewels regularly with a soft cloth. This will not only bring oxidised jewellery up to a nice shine, but it will remove substances that may cause the jewellery to continue to oxidise quicker.

CLEANING

You can clean your jewellery by rubbing with a soft polishing cloth. A couple of drops of gentle detergent in warm water can also be used, before rinsing and drying with a soft polishing cloth. Gentle silver polish may be used on silver only, not shells.

Art Pieces

Indoor

Indoor pieces can be dusted with a gentle duster.  Please be careful not to snag any protruding paua as this can cause breakages.  Any mirror and be gentally buffed with a soft cloth.  I personally don't use mirror cleaner but if you must, spray the cloth first before buffing mirror.

Outdoor

Outdoor pieces don't require much cleaning. I use mold resistant grout however a sealer treatment every 3 years will prolong the life of the grout.  I use Sure Seal Quick Dry aerosol spray on Tile and Grout Sealer. VERY easy application.  Spray lightly over the whole pieces. Sometimes mirrored pieces require a light buff to bring up the mirror clarity.  Please be careful not to snag paua pieces.

Paua looks best in indirect light. This means the colours will pop the most while shaded. If you have chosen to place your piece in direct sunlight UV rays will deteriorate the coatings. You can either repaint the paua pieces with resin every 3 years, or let it choose to naturally age.  Aged paua pieces still look incredible up to 10 years.  Beyond this I haven't seen 10+.  Please see guarantee for more details.
